2010-2011 Recipients
Daniel Avila
Daniel attended Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, PA. This fall he will attend Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Oklahoma, his major is in Aviation Maintenance Technology. His goals are to make his parents proud of him, to keep learning throughout his life and some day become a commercial pilot.
Daniel volunteers in his church.
Mr. Burgio his supervisor at work, in his letter of recommendation said, “He is timely, reliable, and conscientious. Daniel represents the level of work ethics and moral character that I wish existed in more youth today.”
Alma Figueroa-Renterias
Alma graduated from John Harris/Harrisburg High. She attends HACC Harrisburg Campus. Her major is Banking and Financial Services.
In the essay she wrote as partial requirement to compete for the scholarship Alma wrote “I want to make my parents proud of me and make them feel that their efforts and sacrifices have been worth it”.
She volunteered to work for the Gala and the Children Christmas event Dec. 19th and 20th.
Alma’s heritage is from Mexico.
Roxanne Garcia
Roxanne graduated from Central Dauphin East High School. She will attend HACC Harrisburg Campus to major in Psychology.
Roxanne has consistently volunteered to work with children for the Estamos Unidos Hablando Espanol summer camp. In school she has been involved in dance, soccer and art. Because she is bilingual, Roxanne has been serving as interpreter in the medical and academic fields.
Her heritage is from Mexico.
Gloria Guardiola
Gloria graduated from Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She attends HACC, Harrisburg Campus where she majors in Photography. Gloria said she is passionate for the journalistic and art worlds. Some of her future goals are to become an Art Therapist, free lance as a photographer and claim her role as a social activist.
She has volunteered for A Service Learning Trip to The Navajo Nation, The Hunger and Homeless Project in WADC, Park Without Trees with SGA and as a photographer at the Latino Multicultural Picnic.
Her heritage is from Puerto Rico.
Marleny Milanes
In the essay she wrote Marleny describes how she struggled to graduate from high school in her native country of Colombia where you have to pay to attend school.
Marleny attends HACC, Harrisburg Campus. Her goal is to become and English as a Second Language teacher.
For the last seven years Marleny has volunteered at her church teaching Bible School on Wednesday evenings. She is a non-traditional student, has three daughters and a supportive husband.
Her heritage is from Colombia.
Paul Miranda
Paul graduated from Cumberland Valley High School. He will attend Shippensburg University as a freshman. His major is Exercise Science to eventually become a Physical Therapist.
Paul has volunteered with Volunteers of America, the National Society of High School Scholars and The Dance Marathon for The Four Diamond Fund. He recently volunteered for the entire day at the EUP Multicultural Picnic
Paul’s heritage is from Puerto Rico.
Emily Ortega
Emily graduated from the Camp Hill High School. She attends John Hopkins University where her major is cellular and molecular Biology with the goal to move into medical school to specialize in Pediatric Neurology. Her dream is to assist communities which are in the greatest need.
She has volunteered as field hockey head coach in middle and high school, field Hockey Varsity Assistant, high school peer educator, special education tutor, tutor to second grade students, tutor at Baltimore City Prison for women’s GED preparation.
Emily’s heritage is from the Dominican Republic
Karen Roman
Karen graduated from the Elizabethtown Area High School. She recently graduated with an Asosiate Degree in Business Administration from the HACC Lancaster Campus and was admitted to Millersville University, where she will major in accounting. Her goal is to become a CPA.
Karen volunteers as a bookkeeper and giving general administrative support at her church. She also helps out families and enjoys guiding potential students who seek to apply to college because it is a complicated process.
Karen’s heritage is from Guatemala.
Gloriby M. Rosario-Viera
A non-traditional student Gloriby attends HACC, York Campus.
Gloriby holds a Bachelor Degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico; reason for which she does not qualify for government grants. Her goal is to greatly improve her English skills at HACC, York Campus to move on to a master’s degree.
In high school she volunteered with The National Honor Society and in College with the Golden Key International Honor Society.
She is scheduled to volunteer for the Estamos Unidos Children Christmas Party to wrap gifts Saturday Dec. 19th and for the Program Sunday Dec 20th.
Her heritage is from Puerto Rico.
